A custom survey commissioned by LastPass revealed the average American had been locked out of ten online accounts in the past month alone.
We polled 2,005 Americans and found the issue didn’t appear to be going anywhere soon, as 63% of respondents surveyed said it was a recurring problem for them.
The results found that memorizing passwords is so difficult that two in three respondents (65%) said they forget it unless they write it down somewhere.
More than half of respondents said they have to execute at least five password resets each month on average, spending at least 10 mins each time doing so. But that doesn’t solve anything permanently, as 57% said they forget their new password immediately upon resetting it.
“Password anxiety” is a real phenomenon, as 64% said they avoid visiting certain websites or accounts where they’ve forgotten their password. For simplicity’s sake, the average respondent said they use the same password for six different accounts, spanning both work and personal.
We can all relate! The research certainly struck a chord with the press. The campaign has secured over 80 pieces of earned media coverage across consumer and tech publications and news sites so far. LastPass also published a blog post on the topic, using the survey findings and infographic for content – seen here with some of the editorial coverage.
