Yubico: 2024 State of Global Authentication

Yubico, a prominent cybersecurity company, partnered with Talker Research to carry out a global study into the current state of cybersecurity — exploring how individuals and businesses are tackling authentication

This extensive survey involved 20,000 participants from Australia, France, Germany, India, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The findings from the research were compiled into a detailed white paper titled ‘State of Global Authentication Survey: A holistic approach to combating cyber threats at work and home’. The report not only presented the survey results but also provided actionable solutions for both individuals and organizations facing increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Together with our news generation team at We are Talker, we also developed a data-driven news story, alongside an infographic and an animated infographic. These materials were strategically distributed to media outlets as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, to raise awareness and encourage informed discussions about the topic.

What did the data reveal?

45% of respondents reported that their personal data, such as banking or email account information, has been compromised by a hacking attempt or scam.

Almost half admitted that they’re reactive to cyber threats, rather than proactively protecting against them, in their personal lives (45%) and at work (44%). And according to respondents, online scams and phishing attempts have become more sophisticated (72%) and successful (66%) due to artificial intelligence.

For those whose personal data has been hacked, 20% reported that a cyberattacker successfully hacked one or more of their personal accounts, including bank or email accounts.

As for cybersecurity in the workplace, 20% disclosed that the company they work for only updates their technology and security policies on an “as-needed” basis.

How did Yubico leverage the findings from their research?

Gathering responses from an international panel across ten countries, Yubico gained valuable insights into personal and professional cybersecurity practices and perceptions, particularly in the context of emerging threats.

Not only were the findings analysed and published in the white paper report, they were shared in a Q&A post with their Vice President of Standards and Alliances — who also discussed the research in more detail at a live webinar titled ‘2024 State of Global Authentication: Tackling Cyberthreats at Work & Home’.

These are some examples of how the research data was utilized and amplified:

“Our collaboration with Talker Research has been instrumental in revealing the critical state of global authentication. The insights from this extensive survey empower both individuals and organizations to take proactive measures against escalating cyber threats. The comprehensive resources we’ve developed—from the white paper to the engaging infographics—are designed not only to raise awareness but also to inspire action. Together, we are equipping people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves in an increasingly complex digital landscape.”
